Both the puzzle pieces and the tray frame have inset pieces of wood glued into place and chosen randomly from a larger selection of woods so that each puzzle is uniquely colored. The irregular tray shape helps lead the solver into the proper placement of the pieces while the vast array of possible placements means you usually don’t have the right shape at the end to fit the last few pieces. A hint: in at least one of the solutions adjacent pieces of inset wood never have the same color, and this is the solution engraved on the back.
